Beyond their social confidence
may lie the deep need for privacy...
Social and Private.

Young persons can vacillate between the lure of the crowd and the privacy of their own room, between their outward social confidence and their inner need to be alone.

For the mentor, it is all about knowing the difference.

Recently, a group of youth taught me to look behind the superficial labels of "extrovert" and "introvert" -- that it may very well be more about the situation and less about any personality type.

Most of the youth in this close-knit group thought of themselves as "ambiverts."

We encourage our mentors to keep this in mind before jumping too conclusions and thus limiting their effectiveness.  .

And ask the youth you work with which they are, but give them the ambivert option.  I be most will say that they are a bit of both.
